What’s the movie about?
It is the year 2005. Day after day, new, daring stock market transactions are being made on Wall Street and the economy is booming. Against this background, even the unemployed become villa owners with excellent returns and minimal risk. In the soulful atmosphere of general prosperity, only the headstrong hedge fund manager Michael Burry (Christian Bale) foresees that the financial world is on the verge of a gigantic crash. When his predictions are not heard by the leading bank bosses, he comes up with a perfidious plan to show up the big banks for their lack of foresight and their greed: the “Big Short”. With other risk-taking speculators such as trader Steve Eisman (Steve Carell), Deutsche Bank broker Greg Lippman (Ryan Gosling) and one-time star investor Ben Rickert (Brad Pitt), he bets against the financial system by making short purchases of shares in major investment banks. In return, big money beckons….
