What’s the movie about?
The city of Compton in the south of Los Angeles is one of the areas with the highest crime rates in the USA. Drug dealing and gang violence are the order of the day here, while the police often treat the suburb’s many African-American residents with racism. The seemingly hopeless situation finally prompted five young men in the mid-1980s to process their brutal everyday lives through music and thus raise their voices against the prevailing grievances. Under their stage names Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins), Ice Cube (O’Shea Jackson Jr.), MC Ren (Aldis Hodge), Eazy-E (Jason Mitchell) and DJ Yella (Neil Brown Jr.), they jointly founded the hip-hop group N.W.A. With hard beats and lyrics that were as honest as they were controversial, they caused quite a stir and made quite a stir with the police. This is one of the reasons why their album “Straight Outta Compton” is so successful. But the fame is accompanied by increasing differences between the rappers, so that N.W.A threatens to break up again shortly after the big breakthrough.
